Microhauler (Biker-Composter)

About the Job:

BK ROT is hiring for a biker-composter! This position will support collecting commercial organic waste by bike in North and Central Brooklyn and processing collected material into compost at our partner gardens.
Microhauling (biking to collect organic waste) work includes biking within a 2-3 mile radius to pick up between 100-300 pounds of residential organic waste from local small businesses. Microhaulers are responsible for following BK ROT’s bike safety guidelines, weighing and recording collected material, and regular maintenance and cleaning of hauling equipment.

Our composting operations involves handling decomposing food, mixing proper ratios of food waste and browns (wood chips, wood shavings, etc.), maintaining a compost system, troubleshooting composting issues, tracking and monitoring compost bin system health, and maintaining a clean and orderly worksite. The ideal candidate is excited about building a more resilient NYC.

10-15hrs/week, weekday availability required
$16/hour starting ($20/hr after 1mo of work)

REQUIRED

Experience on bikes and be comfortable on the road

Excellent communication skills

Able to work independently and on a team

Able to complete tasks from start to finish

Punctual

Follow BK ROT’s bike safety and COVID protocols

Able to lift 50 lbs

Great attitude and interest in environmental stewardship, community building, gardening, food recovery, etc.

Attention to detail around data collection and relaying information

Kindness and direct communication in public spaces when representing BK ROT and working with community members and garden partners.

BK ROT’s mission is to provide accessible, entryway jobs to youth and young people ages 16-24 who have barriers to the workforce and/or have been impacted by waste and food inequities (high concentration of waste infrastructure in our neighborhoods; lack of access to fresh food; lack of access to composting options; etc.)
